technology seems scary
but it can be tamed
a presentation in three acts
- what has been done
- what your community can do for you
- what you can do right now

Your Community
what can your community do for you?
encourage (public) discussion--it’s free!
social media
attract interest from new kinds of people
but build within your patrons’ technical comfort zone
how much can you afford?
in time?
in money?
good, cheap, fast: pick two
examine your budget
the cost of advertising, printing brochures and e-campaigns
alternate funding
- sponsorship (ads)
- actual ad revenue (GoogleAds)
- training grants (Trillium Foundation)
ten things you can do now
- put your URL everywhere
in every single email you send, brochure you print, business card you hand out - invest in your brand, use your brand
re-use your designs, and your media releases - collect email addresses
but do not publish or share this information ever - speak out
make it part of your schedule to update your Web site and communicate with your patrons - communicate with your community of characters
ask your staff, patrons, actors and techs how they spend their time on-line - discover content, solicit content
take advantage of the content your community is creating on their sites - be social with social media tools
blogs, Yahoo! Groups, facebook, myspace - be part of your community
use community calendars to get your word out - talk about what you do
at every opportunity, talk about your projects on mailing lists, discussion boards, community calendars, in emails, media releases, ... - learn how to do more
funding agencies like to support self-sufficiency
What will you do differently on Monday to promote your business on-line?
