Showcase: The Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library

The next generation of library service is coming to your local library. Advances in information technology and the Internet are enabling smaller local libraries to deliver services, programs and even collections that rival their big city counterparts.

The traditional library still remains, but even within the walls of the library things are changing. In addition to books and magazines, libraries now include CDs, DVDs, ebooks, microfilms, and videos. Libraries are also reaching out beyond their walls. As libraries continue to embrace the Internet and other emerging technologies, patrons are able to access library programs, services and collections wherever there is Internet access.

Come discover how your local library connects you to global knowledge!

Using Moodle: Open Source Technology and the Future of Learning

Our students are changing, their needs are changing, our understanding of learning is changing, our student population is declining (rapidly) and on top of it all, our technology is changing.

In an effort to address many of the challenges of change, The Bluewater District School Board has implemented Moodle as part of its blended learning plan. Moodle is a free open source web-based learning management system (LMS) built on sound pedagogical principals. It has taken the world of learning technologies by storm, becoming the fastest growing and most talked about learning management system in higher education.

This interactive workshop will examine:

1. The advantage of using open source applications.
2. The open source business model.
3. The challenges of implementation a learning management system.
4. The impact and advantages of using technology in a blended learning context.
5. The role of technology in the future of our students in rural areas.

The session will be of interest to ICT professionals and entrepreneurs, corporate trainers and educators.

Supporting Education Through Technology: A look ahead

Join representatives from the Ontario Telemedicine Network, Georgian College and the Bluewater District School Board as they look into the future of how technology can support and supplement existing face-to-face educational opportunities in our region. Some of the topics that will be touched on during this panel include: technology enhancements to the office and classroom for distance participation; the cost of technology; the opportunities technology provides; a discussion of the post-secondary needs/wishes of the local business and education communities; and a sneak peek at some of our region's upcoming initiatives. Bring your questions and your comments to this session and help to shape the future of technology and education in our region!

Online education: strengths and weaknesses. The results of one project.

Is online education all it is cracked up to be? Is it easy to do? Hard to do? What factors can make or break an 'elearning' project?

This workshop will go through a recent case of the development, funding, and deployment of one online education course. While the names will be changed to protect the innocent it will be a graphic discussion of what perils lay in store for people who want to make online education possible.

Testimonials

I had the opportunity to attend one of Emma Jane Hogbin's teleconference sessions on Effective Email Campaigns and how to market effectively using these services. What a wealth of information to be had in an hour. Well worth and time and money one would pay for these services. Emma Jane is patient, clear, knowledgeable, and understanding when it comes to any question you ask her on this subject and more.
